Our Art Education Offer Takes Up Residency In Manchester Museum

We are delighted to now have a residency at Manchester Museum alongside our other learning bases in the North West. Together, our innovative approach will support and include all young people in Manchester – Hello future.

We focus on engaging young people through quality Art, Design and Craft learning opportunities, is to take up residency in Manchester Museum for an exciting new project:

DECONSTRUCTING MIGRATION – A MANCHESTER MUSEUM PARTNERSHIP PROJECT

The first cohort of young people are learners with additional needs, mainly Autism Spectrum Disorder, and are struggling in mainstream education.

Learners will begin their exploration and journey investigating the Heritage Collections at the museum exploring ‘Migration’ themes under its most deconstructed and most extensive connections. They will also explore the History of Migration and the upcoming South Asia Gallery, Migration of Artefacts from around the world, and Eco Migration. Key figures, moments in time and stories will be investigated, identified and unravelled.

We have team of Teachers, SENCOs and Wellbeing Specialists who work to immerse young people with the local Arts and Heritage spaces, and connect them with local artists. The project’s Artist-Educator, Deborah Smailes, will lead a narrative that is co-created with the young people and authentic in its outcomes for the learners.

Deborah has over twenty years’ experience working within the fashion industry and a (PGDE) in Art and Design and is currently involved in research focusing on fashion sustainability. The students will also work closely with the design and curatorial teams at Manchester Museum.

We have previously partnered with The Silk Museum in MacclesfieldThe Hat Works Museum in Stockport and currently has learning bases in Leigh Spinners Mill, Burnley Queen Street Mill and Macclesfield Heritage Centre.
